By the mid 1980s, professional wrestling was hugely popular across North America. The WWF was riding high above all others in attendance and ticket sales, and this was never more evident than in late summer of 1986 when they held “The Big Event”.
What essentially was a glorified house show on steroids, Vince McMahon took his show up north to Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, Canada to not only showcase the drawing power of the World Wrestling Federation, but also do somewhat of a test run for what would come months later at WrestleMania III.
Featuring WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan defending against his former friend “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat in a SnakePit match against Jake “The Snake” Roberts, and hometown heroes The Fabulous Rougeou Brothers taking on The Dream Team, this was one of the first big mega-event stadium shows the company would put on that broke records.
For classic wrestling fans this is one to watch just to get a flavor of what the WWF was like back in 1986. For new school fans, there are a few matches worth seeing for historical reference.
