NJPW G1 Climax 27 A-Block First Night REVIEW

The 2017 edition of New Japan’s G1 Climax kicked off Sunday night with a packed A-Block and an undercard that wasn’t too shabby itself.

With four tag matches that all were between ten to fifteen minutes, they set up stories for Thursday’s B-Block first night. Kenny Omega being afraid (seemingly) of Minoru Suzuki, the first battle between Suzuki Gun and Bullet Club, Yano and Okada being on opposite sides of a tag match, and Los Ingobernables Da Japon in a tag match against each other, there was plenty to take in during the first hour.

SANADA debuts a new lookThe second half of the show picked up with some really great pairings, including a heartfelt battle between Yuji Nagata and YOSHI-HASHI, a brawl between Bad Luck Fale and Togi Makabe, a strong style exhibition with Ishii and Goto, a technical gut wrencher between Zack Sabre Jr. and Hiroshi Tanahashi, all capped off by the main event.

The first Match of the Year candidate from the G1 27 came on night one with Kota Ibushi and Tetsuya Naito tearing down the house in an epic encounter. Ibushi was so moved her cried before and after the match.

We also look at the standings and where everyone is now as we head into Thursday’s show.
